The Bibliography of Slaving, Dependency and Coercion in (pre-20th C.) China and Asia

By Claude Chevaleyre (CNRS-IAO/BCDSS)
As of April. 10, 2020

Following recent trends in Global History (especially global labor and slavery history), Asia scholars have slowly come to acknowledge the need to revisit the complex issue of “slavery” in Chinese and Asian histories. A modest contribution to the field, this page offers an extensive bibliography of secondary literature about slaving, dependency, and related issues in China and Asia (with reference to the wider Indian Ocean World). Primary sources are (for the moment) not considered. The bibliography’s main focus is (mostly) on the early-modern period, but will progressively extend to earlier and later periods.
